the brief
Parkin Costain has been day dreaming about the mountains since he was a little kid. To bridge the dreams of his childhood with his present reality as a pro skier in this 2025 ski film, I created a visual system centered around childhood doodles and the classic kid game, Line Rider.
The process started with a brainstorming session of how to transition from a "flashback" scene to the present-day. The result slowly morphed in to a full design and animation treatment for Parkin Costain's film "FLIPBOOK".
Deliverables include 3 hand drawn animated sequences with 2.5D transitions, a title treatment, credit animations, and multiple poster designs.
This film was featured in the 2025 Freeride Film Festival, screening in front of audiences across Germany and Switzerland.
the process
THE OG TRANSITION
Exploring how to transition between the past and the present was the kickstart to this project. By tying in a doodle-style and slower frame rate animation treatment, the identity for the film began to form. This opened up more possibilities to develop and integrate a design style in to the film.
THE TITLE
Tying in to the use of an actual 'flipbook' led to a sketched-on title treatment that would appear on the front of a traditional composition notebook.
THE POSTER
The poster design was the cherry on top of the design package for the film. Having grown up with ski posters plastered all over my walls, I had insight in to styles and themes that connected with the film's audience. Many posters that I gatherd as a kid remain in my poster collection to this day, and it was a huge motivator thinking about all the young skiers who might have this poster up on their wall. What would inspire them and connect them to the 'greats' that they look up to?
